Special: By: Peter Meingast We share in the grief of those families affected by the tragic events that took place this week. The people affected directly will never forget their loved ones, taken so abruptly. The grief of those families spared will surely turn into the resolve that these cowardly acts will neither silence nor deter democracy in our society from being and becoming all it can be. Let us advance in unity. The lady called LIBERTY has witnessed the arrival of multitudes of the disadvantaged, the oppressed and those seeking to put their energy to work, to build a country based on the ideals of liberty and democracy where anyone could rise to the level their ability and creativity allowed. Millions have realized this dream. Our society may be a society with problems but it is also a society where anyone may speak about them. We enjoy the freedom of press, even when the press is excessive in their definitions. We enjoy the freedom of religion, even when there is bitter conflict elsewhere in the world in the name of religion. We have a franchise in our right to vote, as we see fit, or not. We have the right to express ourselves as we wish, given respect for the rights of others to also do so. The lady Liberty has played host to more than two million people annually. Her message is not lost or lessened by these acts of a twisted soul. Indeed, the principles are enhanced and our values reaffirmed. Those ancestors who came to America came to get away from the princes and warlords who felt they had the right to bring others under their personal form of insanity. When the megalomania and grudges of princes, kings, un-elected warlords or bullyboys are allowed to prevail, humankind always pays. This we will not allow. Do not be deceived that the serenity of Liberty means that she, or we, have forgotten the struggle that attended the creation of our society against incredible odds. It took the dedication, talents and generosity of our forbearers to create a society that enables the individual to rise. The War of Independence changed us, the war of the North and South changed us, Europe's carnage of WW1 and WW2 changed us, and Pearl Harbor changed us, as did Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War. All that history changed us. However, none of all that lessened the resolve, desire, hope and commitment to stability, peace and civilization. Whoever you are, we will not allow you to bring down our society. Our fathers and mothers did without too much for our generation to allow that. We walked in the front door of this land after we had waited in line to do so in order that we would enter properly and be able to add to the dignity of this society. We remember the first thrill of American liberty, even today in our grief. Many others in the world still want to feel that thrill. God bless democracy. © Copyright 2001. Galt Western Personnel Ltd.
